One of my favorite quotes relating to insurance and claims is,
"The Best Claim is a Closed Claim." I learned that in the very
beginning of my career and it's something no one can argue
with. The policyholders want their claims closed, so they can
get their property repaired or replaced and get back to normal
life, as they know it. Insurance companies want claims closed
as well, for many reasons, one being customer retention.
I never thought I was a better adjuster than anyone else out there. I just knew that
I would work hard to get the claim closed as quickly as possible. All adjusters
have the same tools of the trade: a camera, a tape measure, a laptop, a ladder,
etc., Most use the same estimating software program. The difference in the
quality of the adjuster is not the specific tools they use, but the time they have
put into honing their skills and the manner in which they wield their tools. A
canvas, paint, and a brush do not make you Picasso.
The sport of wrestling has taught me several life
lessons. One of the most important lessons learned is
that there are never any wrestling champions born...
they are made out of long hours, hard work and a lot of
blood, sweat and tears. As a coach, I teach my
wrestlers that in order to be good and proficient at a
double leg takedown, you have to practice executing
1,000 or more double leg takedowns.
I have also learned that like the good wrestlers, the
good adjusters are made over the course of time,
through the long hours and piles of paperwork, and their
fair share of blood, sweat and tears... one catastrophe
at a time, one total loss fire at a time.
